Green Smoothie Simple Start

Nature's Food Fast:
Green smoothies are blended beverages that combine fresh or frozen fruit and leafy greens like kale, collard, and spinach to make nutritious eating easy, quick and delicious.

Build Your Blend:

*Choose a liquid: 4-8 oz depending on how much smoothie you make and water content of fruit
water
all natural fruit juice
milk (soy,nut, hemp, etc)
coconut water
kefir
aloe vera juice (less is more)

*Choose your fruit: Any fresh or frozen fruit will work, depending on your preference and what is in season
pear
apples
raspberries
blueberries
cherries
pineapple
oranges
black berries
grapefruit
mango
grapes
melons
peaches
plums
apricots
kiwi

Bananas help give your smoothie a creamy and velvety consistency but if you do not like bananas try using one of the following fruits to help give your blend a smooth texture: mangoes, white sapote, papaya, peaches and apricots, and avocado.

*Choose your green: Spinach and romaine are the best greens to start with because they are milder than kale or beet greens.
arugula
beet greens
bok choy
broccoli rabe
cabbage
chard
collard greens
dandelion greens
kale
lettuce
mustard greens
spinach
turnip greens
watercress
carrot tops
endive

*Optional Ingredients:
flax seed
dulse flakes
wheat germ
oatmeal
granola
vanilla
ginger
cocoa
nut butter
hemp seeds
yogurt
nuts
fresh herbs (mint, basil, parsley, cilantro, etc)
sweetener (honey, stevia, agave, etc)

Frozen Assets:
Buy fruit on sale and in season and freeze it before it goes bad. Produce will never be wasted in your home again. Depending on how fresh the produce is it can last several days. I keep enough greens in the fridge to last me a week and then I freeze the rest. Have a variety of frozen assets on hand and you'll never put off making that daily green smoothie because you don't have 'stuff' to put in it.
Costco: spinach 2.5 lb bag for $4.00, bananas $0.39/lb, large bags of frozen fruit from $8-11

Kids Love Green Smoothies
Green smoothies are a great way to nourish kids and they love them!! Have them help you make them and give them a name like Shrek Smoothie or Princess Power. Give them their own special smoothie cup and a fun straw. Try freezing your green smoothies into popsicles and add a little yogurt and extra sweetener. (Note: If they don’t like the green smoothies at first, then start them off with a regular fruit smoothie and then start sneaking in the healthy goodies.)
